Are All Things More Certain In Bold?

April 18, 2008 at 20:20 (Rants, Tech) ()

Er.  Decided to update the formatting of the first articles to appear on All Things Uncertain to match the more recent additions – and broke everything.  Somehow.

Gah.  All this bold makes my eyes bleed.  I’ll try to fix it but technology makes me cry.  Mostly my hope is that if I post enough new entries then the offending older articles will vanish onto a second page that can be safely ignored.  Talk about a bright new hope for humanity, eh?

Apocalypse, Then: A Review of The Stone Gods by Jeanette Winterson

April 17, 2008 at 21:37 (Books, Reviews, Science, Tech) (, , , , )

Renowned for her comic novels, and perhaps concealed by them, Jeanette Winterson’s latest is a poetic lament, sung for a world in what the author supposes to be its last throes.  Unquestionably passionate and at times dazzling in its invention, The Stone Gods is another of those science-fiction novels originated by the throng of unlikely writers who mean to transcend the boundaries of mere genre into high art.  Excusing for a moment the insulting presumption begged by such a trend, the net result has been an influx of predictably high-minded chaff, but from amongst the multitude several noteworthy new voices have sounded.  From Oryx and Crake through to last year’s unforgettable Cormac McCarthy, the naturalistic grounding that has suffused sci-fi of late has imparted upon it a gratifying sense of literary importance, and considered readers will be glad to add Winterson to the ranks of writers drawn out of their comfort zones to grace a genre held very dear indeed.

Ben-Hurt

April 6, 2008 at 5:22 (Health, News, Rants) (, , , , , )

Breaking news, everybody.  The Associated Press are reporting that Charlton Heston has died, ostensibly from complications due to Alzheimers.

So, in the budding moments of poor taste’s reign, let me be the first to say: good riddance.
